A network of digital advocates welcomed Reddit’s commitment to strengthen its cooperation with the Philippine government following a meeting with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC).
Digital Pinoys National Campaigner Ronald Gustilo, who participated in the meeting, said Reddit’s commitments to establish a dedicated Green Lane mechanism for government complaints and designate a Philippine-based representative are positive steps toward making global digital platforms more reachable, responsive, and accountable.
“The establishment of a dedicated Green Lane and the designation of a Philippine-based representative are important steps. Government agencies need clear and effective channels through which legitimate concerns can be raised and addressed, particularly when these involve serious threats to public safety and online safety.”
Gustilo said having a Philippine-based representative can help ensure legal compliance and facilitate faster coordination in cases involving threats to public safety, exploitation of minors, violent extremist content, cybercrime, and other serious online threats.
“Platform accountability is not simply about imposing requirements on technology companies. It is also about creating practical mechanisms that allow government and platforms to work together when urgent concerns arise.”
Gustilo added that stronger platform cooperation and digital rights can coexist, provided that mechanisms are transparent, lawful, and subject to appropriate safeguards.
“We believe that platform accountability and digital rights can coexist. Stronger cooperation does not have to mean weakening legitimate online freedoms. It should mean having clear, lawful, and effective processes for responding to genuine threats while respecting users’ rights.”
Gustilo also recognized the efforts of DICT and CICC in engaging directly with global technology platforms and pursuing concrete mechanisms for cooperation.
“We welcome Reddit’s willingness to respond to the concerns raised by Philippine authorities and establish stronger lines of communication with the Philippine government. We likewise commend DICT and CICC for continuing to pursue direct engagement with platforms.”
Gustilo said the commitments should now translate into clear procedures, timely responses, and measurable improvements in how serious complaints and threats involving Filipino users are handled.
“This is an important step, but it should be the beginning of sustained cooperation. What matters now is turning these commitments into actual mechanisms that work when Filipino users, children, families, and communities face serious online threats. Digital Pinoys also remains committed to supporting constructive dialogue among government, technology platforms, and civil society toward a safer, more accountable, and more responsible digital environment for Filipinos.”
