Ban Hammer Looms: Digital Pinoys Backs Gov’t Warning vs Roblox

A network of digital advocates is supporting the government’s strong stance against the online game Roblox, warning that failure to protect Filipino children should have real consequences.

Digital Pinoys national campaigner Ronald Gustilo said the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) made the right call in raising serious concerns over reports that Roblox has been used as a platform for grooming, exploitation, and exposure to illegal activities, including drug- and violence-related content.

“Video games that primarily target young users have a heightened obligation to ensure their safety. If these obligations are not met, then regulatory intervention is not only justified. it is necessary,” Gustilo said.

Gustilo emphasized that the issue goes beyond isolated incidents, pointing instead to systemic failures in content moderation, user protection mechanisms, and game developer accountability.

Gustilo also outlined key measures that platforms like Roblox must implement, including stricter age verification systems, proactive moderation combining artificial intelligence and human review, faster response to abuse reports, and full cooperation with Philippine authorities.

“The government’s warning should not be misconstrued as censorship. This is about enforcing accountability in digital spaces where Filipino users—particularly children—are at risk,” he added.

Gustilo further stressed that allowing unsafe digital environments to persist undermines public trust and exposes users to preventable harm.

Gustilo also reiterated the need for a broader and clearer regulatory framework governing digital platforms operating in the Philippines, particularly those with significant youth engagement.

“Digital innovation must go hand in hand with digital responsibility. Platforms cannot profit from engagement while neglecting the safety of their users,” he said.

It’s refreshing to see digital advocates like Digital Pinoys standing up for child safety online, especially when platforms like Roblox are being used as breeding grounds for exploitation. Ronald Gustilo’s point about systemic failures in content moderation really hits home—regulatory action isn’t about censorship, but about holding developers accountable for the well-being of their users. This kind of proactive stance is exactly what our digital landscape needs.
