Digital Pinoys presses Google on GoreBox child safety failures

A network of digital advocates has criticized Google for its failure to comply with the Philippine government’s request to temporarily suspend downloads of the 18+ rated game GoreBox through the Google Play Store.

Digital Pinoys National Campaigner Ronald Gustilo said Google’s continued inaction is inconsistent with its earlier commitment to disable downloads within 24 hours upon receipt of the government’s request.

“It has been five days since the government submitted its request, yet Google has still not acted. This delay raises serious questions about Google’s commitment to child safety and its willingness to cooperate with legitimate government requests involving public safety.”

Gustilo also questioned the effectiveness of Google’s age assurance mechanisms after minors were reportedly able to download and play the game despite its Mature 18+ rating.

“A game carrying an 18+ rating should not be easily accessible to minors. The fact that children were reportedly able to download and play the game demonstrates that the existing safeguards are inadequate. A simple declaration of age is not meaningful age verification because age ratings have little value if they are not backed by effective enforcement and reasonable age assurance measures. “

Gustilo emphasized that Digital Pinoys is  advocating for stronger child protection measures and accountability among all stakeholders.

“Parents have a critical role in supervising their children online, but they should not bear the responsibility alone. Child safety is a shared responsibility. The Government, parents, game developers, and digital distribution platforms all have obligations to ensure that mature-rated content remains accessible only to its intended audience.”
